Misunderstanding

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve encountered misunderstandings between songwriting collaborators, or artist with producers, or mix engineers with clients, simply because the terms were not specified with a written document. Do not, I repeat, Do NOT let money be involved!

Put it In Writing

Unfortunately, “This is what we agreed on”, or “I didn’t understand this to mean that”, is all too common. Always make sure that everyone involved has worked diligently to understand all agreements, by “PUTTING IT IN WRITING”!

Don’t assume talking about it was enough. If you’re not sure what to do, seek counsel, and not just any counsel. Yes, get a lawyer, but get an entertainment attorney, or one who is qualified in Music Business legal matters to help you.

Make sure what you meant is clearly represented on paper! That written document supersedes all, and can be the difference between royalties due verses royalties actually paid, or quality product you were expecting verses what you received. When feelings get hurt, or when someone feels slighted, it’s a rough road from there. Take the time to do it right, by having it correctly written.

What can you do better from now on?
