Be Original!

Don’t be afraid to write songs the way you feel them in your heart! Never demean your talent, even if your skill set is small in the beginning.

It’s an honor and a wonderful tribute to admire the gifts and talents of others. There’s nothing wrong with that; however, when you admire in excess, you signal to your own soul that you are inadequate, thereby, putting breaks on the creative gifts that want to engulf you!

Don’t feel the need to copy those you admire in order to self-validate. If you’re going to copy anything, copy how they structured their songs. Study the format (i.e. the structure), the arrangement and learn the rules of songwriting. Doing this will exponentially increase your songwriting skills. That’s a good thing. Yes, by all means, study the hits, study those you admire, but not to copy and to sound like them, but to learn from them.

Then, take what you’ve learned, and go for it! Be Original! Even if you break some of the rules, there’s something about authenticity and lyric sincerity that touches hearts unlike any other. If that melody is on point, then you’re on to something great! Trust me, we need that in the Music Industry!
